Knights of Columbus To Give A Dance Each Week for Camp Cody Men

As the dance and watch party given by the Knights of Columbus at Community Service of Columbus at Community Service hall at Deming, New Mexico, on New Year’s eve, proved to be such a success, they have decided to have a dance each week for the soldiers and their friends. The hall is located in the heart of the business district and is well patronized by the officers as well as the enlisted men. Everything that goes to make the boys feel at home is to be found in the club, piano players, Victrola, large library, games of all kinds and stationery.

A large rest room is provided for the women and they, too, are enjoying the entertainments afforded by the hall. James P. Camp Cody Supplies Arrive in El Paso, Texas

The last of the supplies from Camp Cody, Deming, New Mexico, which aggregated 500 cars and were shipped to quartermaster’s depot in El Paso, were received and unloaded Thursday, according to Captain G. C. Randall, assistant zone supply officer. 725 Men, 15 Women Given Jobs By Deming Agent

Field director C. H. Stearns, of the U. S. employment service, is spending a few days with the local employment bureau, managed by S. J. Smith, and according to Mr. Stearns the Deming bureau does the largest business of any government employment agency in the state, sometimes putting one over on the central office at Albuquerque.

During the past month Mr. Smith has found good jobs for 725 men and 15 women, Fort Bayard, Whipple Barracks, Camp Cody and Gage getting the largest number of laborers.

He has “cleared” these people through his office at an expense of 35 cents per head. Mr. Smith gives preference to return soldiers, sailors and war workers. – El Paso Herald Newspaper – Friday, January 10, 1919

Water Connections Disconnected at Camp Cody, Deming, NM

“Manager Buford, for J. W. Thompson, contractor at Camp Cody, is having the water connections which supply the remount depot and the base hospital in that camp disconnected from the rest of the system which was constructed to supply the entire camp,” said A. W. Pollard, attorney of Deming, New Mexico, at the Paso del Norte hotel Sunday night. “I was informed that all the water pipe, except that for the hospital and remount depot is to be taken up, salvaged, like the rest of the camp which has been abandoned. Deming’s Camp Cody Will End Use By Last of February

Except for the base hospital at Camp Cody, Deming, New Mexico, which is to be retained for returned invalid soldiers, the military camp there will probably be entirely demobilized by the end of February, according to W. E. Holt, a newspaper man of Deming, who arrived in El Paso Monday. A working crew from Columbus, New Mexico, was sent to the camp last week to facilitate the salvaging of buildings. Salvaging Camp Cody is Abandoned For Present

Salvaging of Camp Cody, while not completed entirely, has been abandoned for the present. District military headquarters announced Thursday that companies F and K, 24th infantry, that have been ordered back to Columbus, New Mexico.

One design photographed showed the buffalo head enclosed in the rim of an olla, or desert water cooler, the division motto, “Duty, Honor, Country” being spelled out by soldiers dressed in blue, white and khaki, “34” appearing in large figures above the head. The other was a solid field.

Prior to making the photograph crest, explaining that Colonel Cody was a scout whose soldierly example it would be well to imitate. Incidentally General Johnston was a long time friend of the famous western scout, at one time serving under him as captain.

Sing As They Stand

To keep the men in good cheer who had waited long in the warm sunshine, General Johnston called upon Lieutenant Carl F. Berry, division song leader, who is a former member of the famous Dudley Buck quartet, to “start something” in music, and the way “K-K-Katie,” “Over There” and “Keep The Home Fires Burning” rolled out over the plains was truly inspiring.

O. A. Aultman, of El Paso, representing the “Screen Telegram,” made movies of the troop movement which will be released in about ten days.

Stand, Sing While Photographer Makes Remarkable “Crest” Picture

According to military authority the most elaborate division photograph ever made in the United States was made Sunday morning of the 34th division in the presence of a vast assemblage who gathered to witness the inspiring spectacle.

The great picture has quite a history. A few weeks ago, Almeron Newman, a photographer of international fame, whose patrons include the occupants of the white house, foreign diplomats and all national, civic and military bodies, went to General J. A. Johnston, division crest, representing the skull of a buffalo, complimentary to “Buffalo Bill,” in whose honor Camp Cody was named, a design previously adopted should be the one worked out.

The 109th engineers, Colonel Downing commanding, with Lieutenant Spelman, a noted engineer, in charge of the work, and a competent force of assistants were, with Mr. Newman engaged several days on the plan that would be scientifically and mechanically perfect, occupying the plains west of the base hospital as a field, and using the big water tower as a point of observation around which to build.

The entire division was ordered to report Sunday morning for the great picture, carefully laid tapes outlining a giant, animated crest which made the perfect skull of a buffalo, with all the lights and shades formed by different colored clothing and caps worn by the soldiers. – El Paso Herald Newspaper – Thursday, August 22, 1918

A very delightful banquet occurred on Sunday, June 23, at the Casual Camp Co. 23 when a seven-course dinner was served. The dining hall and tables were beautifully decorated with National colors. Plates were laid for 50. Mess Sergeant was Sarl Kempton.
